SEO - do not get banned (part 6)

Be creative with your keyword searches. Brainstorm the terms that are used in your niche and use every possible variation in your web copy. This was you will pick up low hanging fruit rather than chasing the plums at the top of the tree alongside every other internet marketer. Sure there are fewer searches but would you rather have five visits a day for each of ten less popular terms, or hang about waiting for ten visits from your jackpot term?

SEO - do not get banned (part 4)

Avoid using duplicate content on your website. If you have pages that appear on other sites, the search engine bots will pick this up and your page rank will drop. For the worst offences, you could be banned altogether. You can easily check your content here.

SEO - do not get banned (part 3)

You may have seen sites or blogs where the meta tags are stuffed with keywords or the content consists primarily of repeated keywords, rendering the page unreadable. SEO - do not get banned (part 1)

If you are using search engine optimisation you will probably have heard the terms 'white hat'- within the rules - and 'black hat' - frowned by the search engines.

All the major search engines can and do penalize sites if they find black hat methods being used. The penalty can be a drop in page rank or removing the site from the search engine's listing, often known as banning. If you are banned, clearly you will receive no organic search engine traffic. Pay Per Click will be your only option to get visitors to your site.

It is easy to fall into the trap of using some of the black hat methods if you are not fully versed in what is acceptable and what is not.

1. Doorway pages these are pages designed to attract the search engines but they contain very little material for the human reader. Doorway pages were one of BMW's mistakes when the car giant was banned from Google. One of its pages appeared at first to contain a sparse amount of javascript, but when javascript was disabled the page content was revealed. It was simply stuffed with the desired keywords, making no sense at all for the audience.

Keywords for Blogs vs websites

If you want to find keywords and phrases for your main web pages you will want to research the best keywords for your chosen niche. When you start a new blog you will follow a similar process, but once you start posting to your blog you are unlikely to have time to keyword research for every post you make.

While you should try to stay on topic as much as possible, you can write more naturally without excessive attention to optimized copy. There are benefits to this:

1. You will start to rank highly in the search engines for some long-tail keywords that others have missed.

2. Your content will read better and sound more natural, leading to more inbound links and higher traffic.

You can download a free step-by-step guide to Search Engine Optimization here.
